here's a thought:
a whole is that which has a beginning, a middle and an end. a beginning is that which itself does not follow necessarily from anything else, but some second thing naturally exists or occurs after it. conversely, an end is that which does itself naturally follow from something else, either necessarily or in general, but there is nothing else after it. a middle is that which itself comes after something else. and soe other thing comes after it.
-aristotle, poetics.
well.. my first thought was.. DUHH.. or is it 'duhh' just because i 'think' thats common sense. or has this description of 'whole', originated from the time of aristotle been drilled into our head so much that it brings us to feel incomplete when something does not have the full element of a beginning, a middle and an end.
so we base our feelings on the 'wisdom' of some dead guy?
i might disagree. if we think something doesnt have a beginning, then there actually isnt one. even if there IS one, but not one that we realize. but it can still be whole. the same goes with something without an ending. some stories never end, but they are complete. and whole.
